I wouldn't have even considered about half of those to be finalists. I see a few good ones got in to the finals, so I don't have to worry that much, but many don't really fit in to EVE at all and too many "space cigars". I don't mind the look of them per se, but the game would be pretty boring if we keep getting so uninspired ship designs added in large numbers.
Atlas - WTF is that supposed to be. It isn't terrible, but unlike anything currently in game.
Arq - A yacht? What is it good for?
naru-kami - Looks good.
ascendancy - looks good.
nergal - meh.
bes - LOL? Doesn't really look like existing races, we don't have such ships and I'm not sure such ship would even be a good idea.
Starship-LA-Battlecruiser - /facepalm
cyruk_velam - nice gallente ship
tsunami - it's ok, but the looks would fit a smaller ship better
omega - LOL at least we know what the guy who remade the scorpion is going to pick.
gatekeeper - it's ok
Yuh - It's not bad, but I've seen that same design in almost every space game I've ever played.
Vision - Looks good. Too bad we might never get to play with it or even see it as it jovian.
okhos - A more block like version of the rokh. Can't imagine seeing those flying around in EVE though. It takes simplicity in design a bit too far.
masonis - a mess and looks more like gallente/sansha hybrid with amarr paintjob.
PS. You know the EVE favorite submissions will be posted as alternatives every time from now on, for the rest of EVE's lifespan, when CCP designs a new ship and it isn't as awesome as they were.

Sadly that very good design didn't have the line art that was required.
It just means that you can't reward the design in this competition. It does not mean that you can't put something like that in to EVE.
After browsing the designs again I'm even more disapointed by these 15. Most are worse in all aspects compared to submissions that didn't get chosen and the judges really ignored the part where the designs where supposed to be a part of an existing IP and not random spaceships. I also can't see how it was even possible for this to get in. I quote the rules Quote: semi-finalists will be selected by full-time deviantART Staff on the basis of Originality, Creative Presentation of the Task, and Technical Artistic Skill.
That PoS had none of those things and still got in to the semi finals. By those criteria I can't see how this 15 could have been chosen, so all that is left to say is bull****, bull****, BULL****!!

Keep trying. If you work hard enough maybe, just maybe, someday you too can achieve that level of artistic talent and vision.

Tornado is particularly sweet :)
Don't forget, the CCP art team will take these and work them over. I'd see them as 'concepts' only... not final art. So they can tweak them to be more in-line with a specific race without too much trouble.
Yes the tornado that wasn't actually a semi-finalist when this all began, but was added later for whatever reasons you want to believe. The ship people said deserved the place more than any of the semifinalists and got mysteriously added later while the most offencive semifinalist people complained about got removed.
The amount of altering needed on some of those desings to make them fit in to EVE will pretty much nullify most of the hard work the original creator did. The only thing left would be the generic shape and at that point there was no point having a competition about it in the first place. CCP could have just allowed us to vote on different basic shapes(omega/, circle, ring, box) and then build a model based on it. Would have been basicly the same thing and saved everyone a lot of time and work.

Whether it is acceptable to shade certain pieces is pretty iffy. I would have said no, but they seem to have disagreed.
The gradient on the escort carriers, however, unambiguously violates every definition I can find for line drawings.
TBH I couldn't care less about what is allowed according to the rules. It is only relevant and important in this competition and it only decides what 1 single ship will be included. As we now know a few of those that made in to the finals are worthy of winning, so what ever happens won't change the fact, that very likely a good looking ship will get added to EVE.
What I really care about is getting more normal ships added to EVE and having them look as amazing as some of the contestants made their ships look. What this competition has shown to me is, that there are a great many designs out there that would fit EVE very well and that there are still many niches and functions that no ship provides or where more ships could easily be added. If CCP only has plans for one novelty ship being added to the game, than no matter who the winner is I will be disapointed in the end.
CCP always tells how long it takes for ships to be added to the game, but still they waste their precious time adding useless gift ships, that just waste the little resources that seem to go to adding new ships to the game. Making the latest gift ship in to an actual ship and a salvaging ship to boot was fantastic. These kinds of additions are what I wish to see when new ships are brought to the game and I hope similar futures for many of the entries of this competition, regardless if their entries violated the rules of the competition or not. All that matters to me is that they were amazing designs and we should not let them go ignored because of minor technicalities.

Originally by: Grozen OMG i absolutely love the idea of advertising transport but don't limit it to 1race only the mini ship looks really good and think about it you could run and advertise your corp so many possibilities.
What possibilities would those be? Really I want you to think about the idea and see how it would actually need to work and what additional things it would bring to the game. I'm not seeing anything other than immersion it would add to the game and that would require loads of work from CCP to implement the system and then control the content of the ads. It is simply much easier to spam local or other channels and provide a direct link to your corp site and ad videos.
It would take a huge amount of work to create these ad ships and make them competative with existing methods of advertising and they would still be less convenient and fuctional for the players. Or were you planning on sitting still while others look through your ship ads. Or maybe it just opens a link to your corp videos and isn't tied to your ship being there in any way, so basicly just like a link in a chat window . So nice in theory and creates some extra immersion, but loads of work for something that doesn't really add anything to the game.

Originally by: El'Niaga I'd suggest folks just sit down and accept it. I know a lot of folks put a lot of hard work into their submissions, and many are disappointed for a variety of reasons. However while we might not want to do one again at DeviantArt if folks just continue to trash them and the artist then no one will touch EVE with a 10 foot pole in the future. So if we want to have future such contests run by anyone we need to realize we need to temper our words and make sure we don't leave such a bad impression that no one wants to help us in the future.
Either you have no clue how this whole deal got started and how people reacted or you are a DA judge alt. There will be no negative reprecussions for EVE from this as long as CCP sticks to their part in the rules of the competition. The anger and bashing you see will not affect EVE negatively in any way and if you had actually bothered to find out what the complaining is all about, you would already know this.
This fiasco is all about DA judges not sticking to the rules and being either lazy or incompetent in their finalist selection. DA artist and EVE players are BOTH bashing the judges for not doing their job properly. These complaints are based on the rules this competition was supposed to follow according to their own rules. The artist did nice random spaceships, but the rules stated, among other things, that it also needed to be ready to fit to the existing universe and show a certain level of artistic skill. An artist who failed to do their homework should not be a finalist and the judges should have had the expertise to be able to tell the difference between what fits and what doesn't or state they aren't qualified to judge so others can take their place. It has never been about bashing the artist or CCP/EVE. It is all about the bad judging.

Congrats to the winners, you all had designs worthy to be included in the game.
\o/ My personal favorite won. Finally another vertical minmatar ship, that is made from 100% pure awesome.
Also Tornado >>> Myrmidon.
